This entry examines the role and place of scholars and jurists in the Islamic jurisprudence, Islamic thought, and Islamic economics and finance. Revered as players of methodological inquiries and novel interpretations and ideas, scholars are recognized as a broad intellectual authority. History shows that the Islamic intellectual life has been vibrant for some centuries during which Islamic thought made remarkable advances. Islamic law as an independent corpus can be safely regarded as a product of Islamic scholars and jurists who have also contributed a great deal to the construction of conceptual and theoretical basis of Islamic finance and economics in both classical and modern times.
