Decellularized Tissue-Derived Materials for Wound Healing

Skin injuries caused by various factors reduce patient quality of life and place a heavy burden on the global health care system. Autologous skin transplantation is considered the most effective strategy for promoting wound healing but is restricted by limited donor skin and physical condition. Moreover, the simple function of current wound dressing shows unsatisfied performances in treating refractory wounds. The decellularized extracellular matrix derived from tissues (TD-dECM), a combination of low immunogenicity, abundant functional substances, and three-dimensional structures, is regarded as a promising alternative for promoting wound healing. In this chapter, the effects of TD-dECM on wound healing were first described. Then, different application forms of TD-dECM and current advances in the improvement of these TD-dECM-based biomaterials are summarized. Finally, we summarize the limitations of TD-dECM and present future directions.
