Future Self-Continuity Questionnaire (FSCQ)
摘要
The Future Self-Continuity Questionnaire (FSCQ) is a multidimensional tool designed to measure the degree to which individuals perceive a continuity or connection between their present and future selves. Future self-continuity (FSC) considers the extent to which people feel emotionally and cognitively connected to their future selves, in a way that influences their current decisions and behaviors. FSC is associated with temporal discounting and health-related decision-making, impacting choices about smoking cessation, engaging in physical activity, improving dietary habits, reducing alcohol consumption, and other health-related decisions. The FSCQ was developed based on a theoretical model of FSC and comprises 10 items and three subscales reflecting three dimensions: similarity, vividness, and positive affect. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis support the FSCQ’s tripartite factor structure and robust content validity, in addition to its sound internal consistency. The FSCQ has been applied across various populations with diverse cultural backgrounds, including adolescents, college students, adults, and military veterans. The three-factor structure has recently been replicated in a Chinese version, with additional evidence from a New Zealand sample further supporting the cross-cultural applicability of the instrument. The FSCQ is not only a reliable, valid, and brief assessment tool offering valuable insights into the psychological underpinnings of health-related decisions, but it also provides a foundation for developing specific interventions that aim to strengthen the psychological bridge between an individual’s current and future selves, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes.
