Sleep-Disordered Breathing and Its Implications in Aerodigestive Disorders

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) encompasses a wide range of disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which affects children of all ages. There is significant overlap in the prevalence of SDB in children with aerodigestive disorders, which can significantly impact morbidity and quality of life. This chapter examines the complex pathophysiology of sleep disorders in children with aerodigestive disorders, explores the range of sleep disorders commonly seen, and discusses diagnostic and treatment strategies for managing SDB. There is a particular emphasis on the wide spectrum of comorbidities, including upper airway disorders and gastroesophageal reflux, with a focus on populations at risk for SDB and aerodigestive disorders simultaneously. Given the complex interplay between these conditions, a multidisciplinary approach is crucial for effective diagnosis and management. Effective management of sleep disorders in this population can improve outcomes of aerodigestive disorders. By gaining a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between aerodigestive and sleep disorders, practitioners can develop more effective strategies for identifying and addressing sleep-related problems in this patient population.
