As the population ages and the incidence of systolic heart failure rises, mechanical circulatory support devices (MCS) are becoming more frequent. The three major MCS devices are ventricular assist devices (VAD), the intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). This chapter will focus on the anesthetic management of patients for and with these devices.
