Dentistry Research in Developing Countries: Achievements and Challenges
摘要
Dentistry research in developing countries faces unique challenges, including limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and regulatory hurdles. However, implementing specific recommendations can help overcome these obstacles and promote sustainable research environments. This chapter provides an overview of the challenges faced by dentistry research in developing countries and offers recommendations for enhancing research outcomes. The challenges identified include limited funding and resources, inadequate infrastructure, brain drain, regulatory and ethical hurdles, language and cultural barriers, and disparities in oral health access. To address these challenges, recommendations are proposed, including increased funding and resource allocation, strengthening research capacity and training, promoting collaboration and networks, establishing ethical and regulatory frameworks, supporting data collection and management, and promoting open access publishing. Other recommendations include engaging with policymakers and stakeholders, empowering local research leadership, prioritizing health equity, strengthening collaborations between academia and healthcare systems, ensuring long-term research sustainability, and collaborating with nongovernmental organizations. These recommendations aim to foster a research culture, bridge the research-practice gap, promote evidence-based oral healthcare, and address oral health disparities in developing countries. By implementing these recommendations, dentistry research in developing countries can overcome challenges, enhance research capacity, promote interdisciplinary collaborations, and translate research into policy and practice. Ultimately, these efforts will contribute to improved oral health outcomes, reduced disparities, and sustainable oral health systems. Dentistry research in developing countries has the potential to benefit individuals, communities, and the broader field of oral healthcare worldwide.
