Epidemiology and Burden of Psychiatric Diseases in Developing Countries

Psychiatric diseases pose a significant burden in developing countries, affecting individuals, families, and communities. This chapter provides an overview of the epidemiology, clinical burden, economic burden, and humanistic burden of psychiatric diseases in developing countries. The prevalence of psychiatric diseases is high, and individuals face a range of symptoms, impairments, and reduced quality of life. The economic burden includes healthcare costs, loss of productivity, and increased poverty rates. The humanistic burden encompasses stigma, social exclusion, and the impact on families and caregivers. To address these burdens, recommendations and strategies are proposed, including strengthening mental health infrastructure, integrating care into primary healthcare, promoting mental health literacy, and providing support for individuals and families. Collaboration, advocacy, and research are essential for reducing the burden of psychiatric diseases in developing countries.
