Psychiatric Diseases Causes and Risk Factors in Developing Countries

Psychiatric diseases are a significant concern in developing countries, with a high prevalence and associated burden on individuals and communities. This chapter explores the causes and risk factors contributing to psychiatric diseases in these contexts. Genetic, environmental, and neurological factors interact to influence the development of mental disorders. Socioeconomic disparities, adverse childhood experiences, cultural factors, limited access to mental healthcare, and environmental challenges play a role in the occurrence of psychiatric diseases. To address these challenges, prevention efforts should target social determinants of mental health, integrate mental health services, strengthen community-based interventions, and raise awareness. Adequate allocation of resources, policy prioritization, and collaboration among stakeholders are essential for improving mental health outcomes in developing countries.
