Infectious Disease Causes and Risk Factors in Developing Countries: HIV and STIs

HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) pose significant challenges in developing countries, with high prevalence rates and limited access to healthcare services. This chapter explores the causes, risk factors, prevention strategies, and recommendations for addressing HIV and STIs in developing countries. The causes include limited healthcare access, poverty, gender inequalities, cultural norms, and migration, among others. Risk factors encompass unprotected sex, multiple sexual partnerships, substance abuse, and vertical transmission. Prevention strategies focus on comprehensive sexual education, accessible healthcare services, condom promotion, targeted interventions for key populations, and community engagement. Recommendations include strengthening healthcare systems, addressing social determinants of health, promoting gender equality, and investing in research and international collaboration. By implementing these strategies, it is possible to mitigate the impact of HIV and STIs and improve the health outcomes of affected populations.
