Hyperlipidemia Management in Developing Countries

Hyperlipidemia, characterized by elevated levels of lipids in the blood, is a global health challenge that significantly contributes to the burden of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes. This condition is not confined to developed nations but is increasingly prevalent in developing countries, posing a pressing public health concern. This chapter explores the epidemiology, prevalence, risk factors, complications, clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, and associated economic and humanistic burdens of hyperlipidemia. In developing countries, hyperlipidemia’s management faces unique challenges, including limited healthcare access, low health literacy, economic constraints, and cultural influences on dietary choices. Nonetheless, this review offers recommendations to enhance prevention, screening, assessment, diagnosis, and management. These recommendations emphasize the importance of health education, localized clinical guidelines, healthcare workforce training, telehealth, mobile health applications, access to affordable medications, community-based programs, and public-private collaborations. Furthermore, the utilization of telehealth and mobile health applications can bridge the healthcare gap in underserved regions, enabling remote consultations, monitoring, and education. Public-private partnerships can facilitate access to essential medications and healthcare services, while robust healthcare workforce training ensures competent care delivery. This chapter highlights the need for data collection, research, and epidemiological studies to inform evidence-based interventions. By adopting these recommendations and fostering collaborative efforts among governments, healthcare systems, communities, and international organizations, we can mitigate the impact of hyperlipidemia and reduce cardiovascular disease risks. Ultimately, addressing hyperlipidemia comprehensively holds the potential to enhance global health outcomes, particularly in resource-limited settings.
