Health Economics in Developing Countries

Health economics research in developing countries is essential for understanding the economic aspects of healthcare and informing policy decisions. This chapter highlights the achievements, quality considerations, challenges, and recommendations for health economics research in developing countries. Achievements include improved understanding of the economic burden of diseases and evidence-based policy recommendations. Quality considerations encompass data quality and availability, as well as methodological rigor. Challenges include limited research capacity and the need for contextual relevance. Recommendations include capacity building, engagement with local stakeholders, policy relevance and uptake, and sustainable funding. Other recommendations include longitudinal and comparative studies, implementation research, and multidisciplinary approaches. Additionally, the importance of addressing health disparities, considering cultural and contextual factors, and promoting gender-responsive analysis is emphasized. Monitoring policy implementation, fostering South-South collaboration, and engaging in policy advocacy are further recommended for enhancing the impact of health economics research in developing countries.
