Health Literacy and Patient Safety

Health literacy is a critical factor in patient safety, and its importance is particularly pronounced in developing countries. Limited access to education, cultural diversity, and inadequate healthcare systems contribute to low health literacy levels, compromising patient safety and health outcomes. This chapter explores the challenges associated with health literacy in developing countries and provides recommendations to address these challenges. The recommendations include integrating health literacy education in formal education systems, community-based initiatives, developing clear healthcare materials, leveraging technology, investing in healthcare workforce development, and implementing policy-level changes. Collaboration among governments, healthcare providers, educators, NGOs, and communities is essential for sustainable improvements in health literacy. By prioritizing health literacy, developing countries can empower individuals, enhance patient safety, and contribute to better health outcomes.
