Constipation Management in Developing Countries

Constipation is a prevalent gastrointestinal issue affecting individuals worldwide, with unique challenges in developing countries. This chapter discussed the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality of constipation in these regions, along with the associated clinical, economic, and humanistic burdens. Moreover, explore causes, risk factors, complications, clinical presentation, and diagnosis. Additionally, we delve into therapeutic goals, non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies, monitoring parameters, and modifiable risk factor interventions, emphasizing patient education and counseling. While constipation affects individuals globally, its impact in developing countries is amplified by limited healthcare resources, sanitation challenges, cultural stigma, and dietary practices. Our recommendations highlight strategies to enhance constipation management, including healthcare infrastructure improvement, public health campaigns, telemedicine, nutrition programs, and community engagement. We emphasize the importance of tailored, culturally sensitive guidelines, resources, and education, leveraging digital technology for wider dissemination. Developing countries must address constipation comprehensively, recognizing its multifaceted nature and the intersection of clinical, social, and economic factors. By implementing these recommendations, healthcare systems can work toward reducing the constipation burden, improving patient outcomes, and promoting a higher quality of life for their populations.
