Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in Pulmonary Embolism (PE)

Ventilation-Perfusion Lung Scanning and Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiography have been the mainstay of pulmonary embolism diagnosis. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a promising alternative to the above studies for the diagnosis of PE, particularly in patients with contraindications to CT or in those in whom ionizing radiation exposure should be minimized. This chapter reviews the various MRI techniques, scope of application, MRI artifacts, and limitations of MRI in acute PE evaluation.
