To better understand the impact of COVID-19 and its complicated disease process, this chapter will first describe the underlying pathobiological mechanisms of COVID-19 coagulopathy. Second, there will be a review of the information on the incidence of VTE and bleeding in patients with COVID-19 and a summarization of the initial consensus recommendations about antithrombotic prophylaxis. Third, the results of trials that evaluated the efficacy and safety of antithrombotic agents for patients with COVID-19 and integrated this information into practical recommendations. Finally, the chapter provides a summary of VTE events after vaccinations against SARS-COV-2, including the phenomenon of vaccination induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT).
