摘要

Most patients with venous thromboembolic conditions are managed with anticoagulation therapy; however, implantation of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters continues to play a role in selected patients. The majority of IVC filters used today are designed to allow retrieval when the need for their presence has been resolved. Non-retrieved IVC filters expose patients to significant risk of device-related complications. In this chapter, the complications of IVC filter retention, timing of removal, removal techniques, and associated complications, and best practices to achieve optimal rates of removal are reviewed. The practice of filter retrieval plays a key role in assuring the safety and effectiveness of IVC filters in the management of venous thromboembolic disease.
