Social Entrepreneurship as a Change Agent for Community Empowerment in Southern Africa

As a subfield of entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship can empower and uplift marginalized and impoverished communities globally. Civil society organizations and social movements resort under the umbrella of social entrepreneurship. These organizations act as mouthpieces for communities and can assist democratic governments with their transformation and social justice agendas. The impact of COVID-19 and the national lockdowns in South Africa are discussed in this entry, and how civil society organizations collaborated and worked alongside the South African government to prevent a hunger crisis. Three further cases of nonprofit organizations are also discussed to show the positive impact of social entrepreneurs and why such individuals and organizations should be supported, encouraged, and embraced.
