Through Turmoil and Transition
摘要
This study examines Ukraine’s complex position in the global migration landscape from 1986 to 2024, focusing on the impact of the 2022 Russian invasion on approximately 400,000 immigrants in the country. Ukraine presents a unique case study, characterized by a continuum of industrial, economic, and political events that have shaped both immigration and emigration patterns. This paper explores how Ukraine simultaneously functions as a major sending and receiving country for migrants while also grappling with significant internal displacement. This research highlights the diverse origins and motivations of immigrants to Ukraine, ranging from students and workers to refugees from regional conflicts. It also addresses the challenges of clearly distinguishing between indigenous populations and immigrants, given Ukraine’s history and ethnic diversity.
