“Trolled, Tricked, and Trapped”
摘要
This chapter re-evaluates how language facilitates psychological manipulation in cyberspaces. As digital communication becomes more powerful, online platforms have turned into spaces where users are not only informed but also trolled, deceived, and ensnared through language. Utilizing the idea of cybernetic shadows, the chapter investigates the hidden forces that influence digital interactions. At the crossroads of linguistics and psychology—termed here as lingua-psychology—it analyzes how rhetorical techniques and emotionally charged language are used in trolling, cyberbullying, radicalization, and misinformation. These are viewed as manipulations of cognitive biases and emotional weaknesses to gain control over individuals and groups, effectively ensnaring them in digital environments. Working through psychological concepts such as cognitive dissonance, the online disinhibition effect, and persuasive communication, along with linguistic methods such as critical discourse analysis and narrative framing, the chapter uncovers how language can bypass rational thought to sway belief, emotion, and identity. It also examines the lasting psychological impacts of exposure to manipulative digital language, including anxiety, self-doubt, trauma, and social withdrawal. Digital environments are depicted as areas where identity is constantly challenged, reshaped, and often destabilized under the subtle yet powerful influence of language. The chapter considers ways to respond to online manipulation through media literacy, ethical digital design, and psychological resilience. Instead of providing traditional solutions, it promotes a deeper contemplation of how language mediates power and psychological control in modern online settings and how language mediates power and psychological influence in the online environment.
