This article examines the undesirable outcomes of university policy in safeguarding female students from sexual harassment in public universities in Zimbabwe. It uses the “unintended consequences of purposive actions” as a conceptual tool to analyze the challenges of the sexual harassment policySexual harassment policy on female students. Qualitative methodology was adopted, and data were gathered using focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with male lecturers, male students, and female students purposively selected from two public universities. The findings reveal that embracing sexual harassment policies resulted in the creation of a suspicious environment, reinforcement of a gendered environment, and stifled mentorship and collaborative opportunities between female students and male lecturers. Further, the policy resulted in the underreporting of sexual harassment. The study recommends constant evaluation and assessment of the policy to avoid compromising the welfare and performance of the female students who are intended to benefit from the policy.
