Refugee children face a complex array of challenges as they adapt to new environments after being displaced by war and conflict. This chapter uses Estonia as a case example to explore the experiences of Ukrainian refugee children, drawing on the perspectives of their parents (n = 11) in the aftermath of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. A qualitative analysis revealed two predominant themes: hindering factors and supportive mechanisms. The challenges included significant homesickness, language barriers, difficulties within the formal education system, and the distinctive impact of adolescence. At the same time, key enablers of adaptation emerged, such as socialization programs, effective peer communication, and positive school experiences. To enhance the adaptation process, tailored educational strategies, psychosocial interventions, and initiatives fostering peer connectedness are recommended. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and practitioners working to support the well-being of Ukrainian refugee children and inform context-sensitive responses to their evolving needs.

摘要
