Inequalities and Young Lives of Care Leavers in China

This chapter examines the multifaceted nature of inequalities experienced by care leavers in China and their profound impacts on their well-being and life outcomes. Drawing on a comprehensive review of existing literature and empirical evidence, the chapter elucidates the various forms of inequalities faced by care leavers, ranging from economic, educational, social to health domains. These inequalities stem from a lack of leaving-care arrangements as well as education and employment support in and outside care. Meanwhile, disabilities and/or congenital diseases, together with social stigma and discrimination, further exacerbated the inequalities experienced by care leavers. These inequalities have far-reaching consequences, contributing to lower educational attainment, reduced employment prospects, heightened psychological distress, and social exclusion among care leavers in China. Therefore, the chapter highlights the critical importance of addressing these inequalities through targeted policy interventions and support services tailored to the unique needs of care leavers. By prioritizing the promotion of social inclusion, access to education and vocational training, and the provision of comprehensive aftercare support, policymakers and practitioners can mitigate the adverse impacts of inequalities and enhance the life chances of care leavers in China. The chapter concludes with implications for future research, emphasizing the need for longitudinal studies and qualitative research to further elucidate the complex dynamics of care leaving experiences and inform evidence-based interventions.
