Enhancing Gender Equality and Implementation in UN Millennium Development Goals: Achievements and Challenges
摘要
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have made gender equality and empowerment of women universal norms under the supervision of the United Nations. The goals focus on the evaluation of many past experiences including improving health, reducing poverty, and expanding education and are designed to work efficiently across member states. Member states work on achieving gender equality, particularly in India. These achievements are noted both in actuality and on paper. This chapter focuses on the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with a new approach to the study of the UN role and programs. Specifically, the chapter elaborates on MDG’s third goal, which deals with the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. It discusses the norms and standards of gender equality, which are decided by the UN, with special attention toward implementation in member states (specifically in India). The chapter investigates the challenges encountered during implementation of these norms and standards in India. The main research questions are as follows: (1) Why has the UN introduced gender equality promotion in MDGs? (2)What norms and standards for gender equality are being initiated by the UN? (3) How are these being accepted and implemented in India? (4) What are the challenges encountered in implementing UN norms and standards relating to gender equality (in the context of India)?
