Transportation and gender equalityGender equality have been subjects of scholarly research for over two decades, significantly influencing policy adaptations to address the needs of women utilizing various transportation systems. This study conducts a comprehensive review of current literature to assess the extent to which urban mobility policies incorporate a gender equalityGender equality approach, integrating the five principles of women’s empowerment in transportation: (1) understanding women’s mobility, (2) developing inclusive mobility services, (3) ensuring women’s security in transport systems, (4) empowering women in the transportation sector, and (5) creating awareness and stimulating behavioral change. The literature reviewed was sourced through a systematic review of the EBSCO Database, encompassing four stages: identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion, ultimately resulting in a total of 29 studies for further analysis. Although the keywords used in the selection process were gender equalityGender equality, transportation, policymaking, and developed countries, 56% of the results pertained to developing countries. The review revealed distinct focuses between developed and developing countries. In developing countries, transportation policiesTransportation policies prioritize connectivity to and from rural areas, safe travel for women, and inclusive planning and implementation. Conversely, developed nations emphasize travel behavior, socioeconomic disparities, and climate change adaptation policies. In the past decade, gender considerations have been incorporated into specific phases of the transportation sector. However, there remains a significant gap in holistic gender inclusion beyond merely addressing mobility behavior. The literature review revealed that only one study focused on the inclusion of women within the transportation industry itself.
