Many contemporary social problems and inequities have their origins in western/European colonialism. For the past 500 years, European nations have conquered, occupied, or appropriated over 80% of earth’s landmass. Countless nations, languages, religions, cultures, economic systems, and entire societies have been either replaced or assimilated with the colonizer’s own world. “History is told by the victor,” as the saying goes. In a similar manner, the contemporary world and its vast inequities and social problems are justified by the colonizer’s model of the world, or “Eurocentrism.” This chapter introduces the historical and colonial origins of eurocentrism, its ideologies and material effects, and contemporary influences.
