The dairy sector plays a vital role in global food security by providing nutrient-rich bovine and buffalo milk and supporting rural livelihoods. With a growing global population, the demand for milk and dairy products is rising. Low milk production systems in many countries rely heavily on labor, while high milk-producing systems in developed countries rely on finance-intensive technologies. The dairy industry however faces significant challenges, including greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), climate change, zoonotic diseases, and the vulnerability of smallholder dairy farmers. Addressing these challenges needs climate-smart practices, improved animal health services, and tailored technology transfer. Well-designed policies linking dairy development with food security objectives can improve productivity, resilience, and sustainability.
