COVID 19 and Language Creativity

The world population has suffered greatly from the new coronavirus, but it could not stop the speakers from using language creatively that arises out of their simple linguistic interactions. The language users created numerous original and creative words and phrases during the outbreak of COVID-19. This chapter deals with language creativity, focusing on innovation, conformity, and incongruence in language with reference to COVID-19. For analysis, the linguistic data related to the global pandemic is empirically categorized into sound, word, and sentence levels. The chapter takes insight from lexical semantics and classifies linguistic creativity with two ideas of creativity: F-creativity roughly equals linguistic productivity, and E-creativity is new and unexpected innovations.
