When Life Does Not Matter Anymore
摘要
Suicide is a major social problem in Nigeria and globally. As such, youths who experience suicidal thoughts and feelings are affected by tremendous emotional pain. More so, divorce, family setbacks, and failed relationship lead to an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness, despair, and helplessness. For youths that become suicidal, the willpower to live is eroded as they perceive that their pain will never end, so putting an end to their plight is only way to stop the suffering. In Nigeria, an increased occurrence of suicide among different population subgroups is on the rise. Among youths, suicide rates have also increased. This chapter examines the perception of youths on the social determinants of suicide among youths in Nigeria. The chapter examines the issue of youth suicide in contemporary Nigeria. It asserts that the stigmatization associated with suicide, rooted in its historical criminalization, has contributed to negative perceptions and attitudes toward individuals who die by suicide. As such, understanding youth suicide is very important. The chapter discusses the risk and protective factors on youth suicide. The risk factors, which include psychological, social, environmental, and cultural factors, play unique roles in making young people vulnerable to thinking about or attempting suicide. While the protective factors tend to act as a buffer against the much vulnerability young people experience. The challenges and barriers to youth suicide are explained. Findings from a survey on youths’ perception of suicide in contemporary Nigeria are discussed in the chapter. The chapter presents some preventive and intervention strategies that are useful to address youth suicide in Nigeria, and the chapter concludes on the need for a multidimensional approach to address the growing challenge of youth suicide in contemporary Nigeria.
