Managing National and Game Parks in Africa

National and game parks have been strategies used to control natural ecosystems for centuries. However, their relevance has been made more acute owing to eminent threats like climate change and overexploitation by humankind. In this vein, the need to employ effective management strategies in national parks becomes more significant. This was the main objective of the chapter – to explore the various management strategies employed within the African region, and thus come up with more effective ones. In this regard, the chapter made use of a desktop research methodology, and thus secondary data were the mainstay of the study. Specifically, data were collected from the Google research engine, and thus data sources like governmental reports, journal papers, and gray literature, were systematically searched. The collected data were then thematically analyzed to come up with main ideas, and these were efficiently deemed the research findings. It was found out that game park management in Africa is heterogeneous, and a case-by-case management strategy is key to understand effective running of the national parks. Nonetheless, pervasive management strategies include collaborations and partnerships among government authorities and various stakeholders, even local communities. It is recommended that, for effective management to be realized, the responsible authorities need to rope in indigenous knowledge systems through the incorporation of local communities in their management systems.
