Climate and Natural Disaster Vulnerability

Bangladesh is a climate-vulnerable country that is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Satkhira district is a southwest coastal district situated nearby Sundarban. Because of its topography and geographical position, the district is one of the highly climate-vulnerable districts in Bangladesh. The study was conducted in four subdistricts of Satkhira district (Satkhira Sadar, Assasuni, Shyamnagar, and Kaliganj) to develop a climate change scenario and its vulnerability on multisector and to find feasible resilient activities in terms of climate-resilient development in the study area. The study was conducted using multidimensional participatory methods including collection, and analysis of long-term climate and disaster data; participatory research such as Household Survey (HHS), Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and Key Informant Interview (KII) to get actual data, perspectives, and experiential knowledge of the vulnerable households and communities on climate change. The study reveals that in Satkhira, agriculture and livelihoods, health, education, and water security of the study area are fragile due to climate-induced disasters. Multisectoral-resilient interventions including nature-based solutions are highly important to overcome the worsening situation.
