Rehabilitation and Return to Sports of Knee Ligament Injuries
摘要
Knee injuries are unfortunately common events in sport, leading to potential severe consequences on the athlete health and career. Knee ligament injuries in particular, contribute to the injury burden in sport and should not be taken lightly. Currently, the literature published on the rehabilitation process after these injuries is sometimes lacking or contradictory. In this way, clinicians are often left without guidance and a specific framework to follow when dealing with patients affected by these conditions. Time-based rehabilitation as opposed to criteria-based progression is still commonly implemented in rehabilitation with progression often decided arbitrarily and without following specific objective measurements. In this chapter a global overview of the entire recovery process of the four main ligaments of the knee, the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, and the medial and lateral collateral ligaments will be presented. The chapter will particularly focus on the most critical concepts of the rehabilitation, discussing the structure and stages of the functional recovery process and outlining the strategies and criteria that should be implemented to safely and effectively progressing athletes through the rehabilitation journey. This comprehensive framework presented by the authors has the function of supporting clinicians in the recovery process of patients after knee ligament injury, with the final aim of optimizing their outcomes.
