Posterolateral Corner Injury

There are 28 unique structures that comprise the lateral and posterolateral aspects of the knee that make up the posterolateral corner (PLC). Previously, the PLC was known as the “dark side” of the knee, because it is a complex area that was difficult to diagnose, treat, and usually would result in poor outcomes. In recent years, the PLC has been readily studied with numerous anatomical, biomechanical, and clinical outcome studies that have revolutionized the management of the PLC. Currently, anatomic reconstruction procedures of the PLC result in successful surgeries and outcomes. The increasing fund of knowledge related to the PLC has resulted in many patients returning back to their regular activities and achieving a full recovery. This chapter will detail basic epidemiology, anatomy, biomechanics, diagnosis, PLC management, PLC surgical techniques, rehabilitation, and outcomes related to the posterolateral corner.
