Discoid Meniscus

A discoid meniscus is a congenital meniscal variant that more commonly affects the lateral meniscus and shows an increased incidence in Asian populations. The anatomical features of discoid menisci make them more susceptible to tears compared to normal menisci. Discoid menisci demonstrate a highly variable clinical presentation and are classified based on their morphology, peripheral stability, and presence of meniscal tears. Initial workup includes a physical examination, plain radiographs, and MRI, while diagnostic arthroscopy may be required to verify meniscal shape and stability. Asymptomatic discoid menisci can be observed, while symptomatic discoid menisci typically require surgical intervention, for which several techniques are described and tear repair may be indicated. Overall, better outcomes are associated with younger patients and early surgical intervention.
