Peripheral nerve injuries make up a mere less than 0.5% of sports injuries. Yet, they pose a serious risk to the long-term career of the athletes burdened with these conditions, particularly when affecting the hand and wrist. It is the job of the treating physician to diagnose upper extremity entrapment neuropathies in the athlete early on through a concise history and physical exam and often with the help of auxiliary tests such as imaging and electrodiagnostic studies. Prompt diagnosis and management through conservative means and occasionally surgical decompression gives the athlete the best chance of symptom resolution and, subsequently, return to sport. This chapter lays out a framework to assist in diagnosing and treating common compressive neuropathies of the hand and wrist that ail all manners of athletes.
