Hallux Sesamoid Stress Fractures

Stress fractures of the sesamoid bones of the first metatarsophalangeal joint are uncommon but can cause significant pain and disability. The diagnosis is often only made after imaging. In the presence of persistent symptoms, operative treatment can be considered. Sesamoidectomy has been the surgical treatment of choice, but recently other types of surgery have been described including percutaneous fixation. Sesamoidectomy could be considered if this technique is unsuccessful. Patients may be advised that return to physical activity is likely following operative intervention.
