Diabetic Pedal Infection

Diabetic pedal infections represent a significant clinical challenge, often leading to severe complications such as limb amputation and systemic infection if not promptly and accurately diagnosed. The diabetic foot is uniquely predisposed to infection due to a combination of factors including neuropathy, vascular insufficiency, and impaired immune response, all of which contribute to the increased risk and complexity of infections in this patient population. Radiologic imaging plays a crucial role in the early detection and assessment of severity and guides the management of these infections. The effective use of imaging modalities such as radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear medicine techniques enables clinicians to distinguish between soft tissue infection, osteomyelitis, and other complicating factors. This chapter aims to provide an in-depth review of the radiologic approaches to diabetic pedal infections, discussing the advantages, limitations, and clinical indications for various imaging techniques. Additionally, the integration of radiologic findings with clinical presentations and laboratory data is emphasized to improve diagnostic accuracy and inform optimal therapeutic strategies.
