Impulse Control Disorders: Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD) share many core symptoms and associated features. In the ICD-11, ODD and CD have been grouped under “Disruptive Behavior or Dissocial Disorders.” In DSM-5, ODD and CD have been placed with like-kind conditions in the subgrouping “Disruptive, Impulse Control, and Conduct Disorders.” Furthermore, this category of disorders involves behavioral disinhibition that results in conflict with societal behavioral expectations and/or the violation of the rights of others. These difficulties include emotional and behavioral dysregulation in the context of psychosocial stressors. Each condition can present with disruptive behavior, academic underachievement, poor social skills, and impulsivity.
