Musculoskeletal Trauma in Elderly Patients

Musculoskeletal trauma in the elderly population (older than 65) presents unique challenges due to age-related degenerative changes, comorbidities, medication use, and increased vulnerability to severe injuries from low-energy trauma, including falls from a standing height. Geriatric patients face a higher risk of complications, prolonged hospital stays, and poorer outcomes following trauma compared to younger individuals with equivalent injuries; femoral and rib fractures carry significant prognostic implications. Radiologists play a pivotal role in the identification and management of these injuries. Radiographs are often used for initial fracture detection, CT for detailed fracture classification and assessment of radiographically occult fractures, and MRI for soft tissue injuries and other occult bony pathology. As the incidence of geriatric trauma continues to rise in the USA, understanding injury patterns and tailoring imaging protocols are essential in improving diagnosis, management, and long-term outcomes following trauma in this patient population.
