History of Palynological Sciences in Brazil

The history of palynology in Brazil is presented in decades and three phases. The first phase (i.e., the 1940s and 1950s) represents the first steps in this science. In the 1940s, studies were restricted to nonpollen palynomorphs and to the Paleozoic period; in the 1950s, research expanded to include all types of palynomorphs and the Mesozoic period. The second phase (i.e., the 1960s and 1970s) is represented by broader and more consistent works, including analyses of a greater number of geological units and a growing, although still small, number of researchers. In the 1960s, research was still restricted to the Paleozoic and Mesozoic, but there was an expansion toward the Cenozoic (including the Quaternary) in the 1970s. The third phase, which began in the 1980s, extends until modern times. It represents the consolidation of palynological studies and a large increase in the number of researchers and groups of researchers.
