Goethe, Ottilie von
摘要
Ottilie von Goethe (née Baroness von Pogwisch, 1796–1872) was an important German socialite in Weimar and Vienna. During her life and into the twentieth century, interest in her focused on her “romantic” biography with its constant search for love, her unhappy relationships, and an illegitimate child. Her letters are prime examples of the romantic language of friendship, longing, and love. Recent studies have emphasized how she promoted German literature and culture to international visitors and correspondents, functioned as a de facto literary agent for translations, mentored young writers, and collaborated with them. She founded and edited the innovative literary journal titled Chaos, wrote poetry, stories, essays, and translations, but published little or anonymously. Although she downplayed any ambitions as a writer, her networking with international writers and translators, especially from England and Ireland, was essential for the reputation of Weimar culture abroad and cultural transfer to and from Germany. Preparatory work for other authors included excerpts of many English-language sources for the liberal writer Gustav Kühne for his novella and play about the Irish revolution.
