Undaunted by the misogynist notion that scientific inquiry was not terrain for the fair sex, many women made critical contributions to the growth and development of scientific knowledge in the Romantic period. Across their endeavors, these pioneering figures wore such hats as specimen collector; research experiment conductor and recorder of subsequent findings and observations; translator of published scientific research documents from and into different languages; illustrator for scientific texts; sciences course educator; and/or author of scientific works for the lay reader. From informational pieces to laboratory notebooks, their surviving outputs showcase how some of the era’s most renowned women of science made their mark in uncharted scientific territory. These women’s intellectual contributions were crucial for the eventual foundation and emergence of the disparate scientific fields of astronomy, mathematics, physics, botany, biology, geology, and chemistry.
