This chapter provides a broad overview of the primary energy storage technologies, ranging from mechanical and thermal systems to electrical and electrochemical ones. A cross-sectional comparison of gravimetric energy density highlights the impact of different materials and nanostructures across these technologies. Although several of these emerging technologies face significant challenges in achieving commercial production, this chapter serves as a reference for a limited yet discernible comparison between the various approaches.
