This handbook chapter provides a road map into primary and secondary literature on Systemic Operational Design (SOD), Israel Defence Forces’ (IDF) evolving philosophy of command praxis and emergent inquiry for general officers. Situating SOD as an oral tradition which poses challenges to conventional forms of scholarship, this chapter traces the conceptual evolution, theoretical underpinnings, and practical applications of SOD within the context of Israel’s security challenges.
