This entry argues that women’s use of elegy both capitalizes on, and exceeds, their social and cultural role as mourners, as memorializers, and as custodians of familial reputation and memory. Rather than viewing women’s elegy through the frameworks of mode and genre, this entry argues that approaches rooted in affect, networks, and proximity provide further insights into women’s strategic use of elegy.
