Pope, Mary

  • Marcus Nevitt

摘要

Mary Pope was a pamphleteer who pressed a Royalist message in three works printed in the mid-to-late 1640s. She presented herself, her works, and a politically conservative message about extent of the Stuart prerogative to Parliament and the General Council of the Army in ways that were regarded as scandalous by her audiences and contemporary newsbooks. Her work, while political, was always densely scriptural and is valuable for the insight it provides about the articulacy and reading habits of women in the politico-religious mainstream during the revolutionary decades.
