Tudor, Margaret, Queen of Scots

Margaret Tudor, queen of Scots (1489–1541), was the eldest daughter of Henry VII (1457–1509) and Elizabeth of York (1466–1503). On August 8, 1503, she married James IV, king of Scots (1473–1513) at Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh. This entry explores Margaret Tudor’s correspondence and book ownership. A substantial archive of Margaret’s correspondence survives today, and this collection offers a fascinating glimpse into her life as queen of Scots, in addition to providing insights into Anglo-Scots relations, women’s political agency, and the Tudor family network in the early sixteenth century. Three of Margaret’s Books of Hours, complete with dedicatory inscriptions, also survive today. These texts offer an insight into Margaret’s gift-giving practices and the relationships Margaret shared with their potential recipients.
