The Tower of London in its role as palace, fortress, prison, royal mint, and royal menagerie is not often associated with female literary production. Delving into its past, a different story emerges. The Tower’s walls themselves demonstrate a rich history of written inscriptions from its prisoners, who etched their names and messages onto its stone. This entry focuses on two famous women prisoners, Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey. These case studies provide us with letters, poems, and prayers apparently written within the Tower’s walls, either literally or imaginatively, with the authorship of some works being disputed.
