This entry offers an overview of studies of sexuality in works by early modern women writers. It discusses a range of early theoretical texts of the 1970s that helped establish both feminism and queer theory. Some of this work is quite well known to scholars of early modern women writers, some less commonly cited and considered. These fields include subordination feminism; cultural feminism; lesbian separatism; gynocriticism; French poststructuralist feminism; sex-radical feminism; and Black, third world, and women of color feminism. This entry surveys the key positions of these fields, as well as some examples of scholarship from each. Following those summaries, the entry describes the legacy of these feminist theories to queer theory as a general field in recent work. A final section discusses studies of early modern women’s writing as a specific field up through the present, again including a few examples of work for further reading.
