Lindsay, Henrietta, Lady Campbell

Henrietta Lindsay, Lady Campbell (c. 1657–1721) was a high-born Scottish woman and author of a spiritual diary. Both of her parents, and then stepfather, belonged to the upper echelons of landed society. Her diary begins contemplating her first communion at age thirteen. Throughout the text, Lindsay includes copious quotations from the Bible, demonstrating an intimate relationship with scripture. Indeed, she was an avid evangelical Presbyterian and abominated Anglicanism and Roman Catholicism. When she reached adulthood, she married a baronet, Duncan Campbell of Auchinbreck, who held Carnasserie Castle, and together they had one son, born around 1681. Lindsay spent several years away from Scotland, living first in England and then in the United Provinces, where she followed her politically active husband and Catholic convert into exile and settled in Rotterdam until the Glorious Revolution (1688/9).
