Jevon, Rachel

  • Suzanne Trill

摘要

Rachel Jevon (bap. 1627) is a somewhat mysterious female poet who published two versions of the same poem in 1660. While these are her only extant poems, they are significant for two main reasons: first, because she is the only woman currently known to have published odes that celebrate the restoration of the monarchy; and second, because they are parallel versions written in both Latin and English. Jevon’s poems thus evidence an early modern Englishwoman who was not only taught Latin but published original poems in that language.
